Service Opportunities at PVUMC

Good Samaritan Fund
The Good Samaritan (Good Sam) Fund is an account that the church uses to help Wichita area citizens with a short-term monetary crisis. We help our church members, as well as those outside the church, as Jesus would have us do.
We work closely with Love in Action (formerly Love, INC) to get client background checks to determine if our Good Sam funds are the best course of action. Love in Action also provides support through financial budgeting classes for those struggling with their bills, and contacts other churches that can provide financial assistance on a case by case basis.
Our congregation is invited to contribute to the Good Sam Fund each month during Holy Communion by dropping their donation in the basket at the front of the sanctuary or by giving weekly and noting the donation to Good Sam in the Memo section of your check.
Thank you for your generous support of this much needed ministry in our community.

Monthly Homeless meal at Open Door feeding 100 – 150 at the Homeless Resource Center in downtown Wichita.  Served on second Monday each month, prepared the Sunday before by volunteers in our kitchen.  Opportunities to shop, food prep (many hands make light work), deliver and serve.

Ongoing Open Door Food Pantry donations.  Each month, Open Door recommends the best non-perishable foods to collect, from cereals to peanut butter.  Also collected are hygiene items and baby diapers continually throughout the year.  Donors will drop off items on the shelf unit in the NE corner of the Narthex.

Care Connection – PV’s Care Team will identify our homebound and other members in need.  Members work one-on-one with visitation, words of encouragement, meals, rides, errands, doing odd jobs, etc.

Ortiz Elementary – PV provides mentors and tutors to the students at one of Wichita’s newer elementary schools on N Arkansas Ave.  Also, on occasion, there is an opportunity to garden or express teacher appreciation, or whatever the need may be.  There are also collections of school supplies and backpacks in the summer, a hat and mitten tree each winter.

Vacation Bible School – Our VBS is very popular, with 150 – 200 participants for 1 week each summer.  There are many opportunities to volunteer in different capacities.

Crop Walk – A fundraising walk-a-thon at Sedgwick County Park to raise awareness and funds for impoverished people to support themselves locally and worldwide.

Ember Hope Angel Tree – Approximately 100 ornaments with various gift wishes are available for us to choose and purchase for foster care youth each Thanksgiving.

Share the Warmth and Operation Holiday gently used winter coats and sweaters collection each fall.

Warming Souls Overflow Homeless Overflow Shelter – PV members supply at least one breakfast and supper during the cold weather season, sometimes more than once.
